A finance assistant gets a call. It sounds exactly like the managing director: same voice, same way of speaking. There's an urgent supplier payment that must go out today. The money is sent. The director never called.
AI voice cloning has made this kind of fraud cheap and convincing. A few seconds of someone's voice — from a video, a webinar or a voicemail — can be enough to imitate them. As we move through 2026 and beyond, every business should assume that a familiar voice on the phone is not proof of identity.
How the scams usually work
- Urgency: "This must be paid in the next hour."
- Secrecy: "Don't mention this to anyone yet."
- A change of routine: a new bank account, an unusual payment method, gift cards or crypto.
- A trusted voice: a boss, a client, a supplier or a family member.
Can you hear the difference?
Sometimes. Cloned voices may sound slightly flat, have odd pauses, avoid answering unexpected questions or have strange background noise. But the technology improves every month, so don't rely on your ears. Rely on process.
Simple habits that stop most attacks
- Call back on a known number. Hang up and call the person on the number saved in your contacts, not the one that called you.
- Use a verbal code word for urgent payment requests within your team.
- Two-person approval for payments above a set amount or to new bank accounts.
- Never change bank details by phone or email alone. Confirm through a second, separate channel.
- Train your team. A five-minute briefing with a real example is surprisingly effective.
Detection tools are improving too
AI can also help defend against AI. Detection models analyse audio for signs of synthesis, and call-centre systems can flag suspicious calls. These tools are useful, but treat them as an extra layer, not a replacement for verification habits.
What to expect in 2027–2028
Real-time video deepfakes on video calls will become more common, and attackers will combine cloned voices with information gathered from social media. On the defence side, expect more banks and platforms to add verification steps and AI-based fraud detection.
